Moving is almost always a stressful experience. All you and your family want is get settled in your new home, but first, you have to physically make the move. Packing up all your belongings is a daunting task, but there are many ways to make packing easier.  We decided to share our tips to help make your next move a little less stressful.

HAVE PLENTY OF BOXES AND MOVING SUPPLIES

If you buy boxes from some of the best Montreal moving companies, you can always return unused boxes for a refund. Have about 10 boxes set aside to use for last minute items on moving day, such as bedding, clothing, and cleaning supplies. You’ll also need strong plastic packing tape, newspaper/packing paper, bubble wrap, and markers. Return any unused supplies after your move.

COLOUR COORDINATE

Designate a color for each room in the new home, such as yellow for kitchen, etc. Apply colored stickers on the box next to the box number. At your new home, put a matching colored sticker on the door of the room the box should go in. The movers will know where to put everything when they arrive. It’s also helpful to post a sign on the wall in the room where you want boxes stacked, to keep them out of furniture and traffic areas.

KEEP THINGS TOGETHER

Keep bookends with books, light bulbs with lamps and extension cords with appliances. Small, loose parts can be attached to the item they go with using packing tape. Keep larger items (such as TV cables) in resealable bags, and tape these to the underside or back of the item (the TV). As a backup, have a well-marked “parts box” and fill it with cables, cords, parts, pieces, brackets, etc.

PACK AHEAD

Anything you can pack ahead will save you time on moving day. If it’s summer, get your winter clothes out of the way. Box up your bathroom items and live out of a toiletries bag for the last week or two. Pare down cooking utensils and food supplies to bare essentials.

KEEP CLEANING SUPPLIES HANDY

Giving you have to clean your old place after moving out, put together a kit of cleaning supplies. Clean anything possible ahead of time (the inside of kitchen cupboards, the oven, windows, etc.) and if possible, vacuum each room as movers empty it.

SAFEGUARD VALUABLES

It’s a good idea to keep valuable possessions, such as collectibles, antiques, money, jewelry, money etc. with you. Check your insurance to see how you are covered during the move and see if you need additional cover. Keep important documents with you, such as birth certificates, school records, contracts, bank records, current bills, real estate information and more.

PERSONAL BOXES

Use brightly colored boxes as personal boxes for each person in your family. Let each family member fill theirs with items they’ll want right away in the new home – such as sheets, a towel, extension cords, mobile phones, chargers, nightlights, keys, tissues, toiletries and more.

GARBAGE BAGS ARE THE BEST

Ah, yes, the humble trash bag. It enables you to transfer your entire closet without removing a single piece of clothing from a hanger: Tear a hole in the bottom of a trash bag, stick the handles of a bunch of hangers through it, then tie up the top (now the bottom) of the bag to seal off your clothes. When you move to the new place, you just have to hang up the bags by the hangers and tear off the bags.

PACK YOUR BAGS

Suitcases are moving boxes on wheels. The big ones are great for bulky, fragile items you don’t want to leave to your movers. A small bag can be packed with essentials – including toiletries and enough clothes for a couple of days. Then you won’t have to fuss over boxes right away. Don’t forget to include a roll of toilet paper and a couple of fresh towels.

AVOID STUFFING YOUR FRIDGE

Transporting food can get messy, and it’s better to just stock the new kitchen. But if you must take food items with you (the riskiest stuff is bottled liquids such as oils, sauces, and vinegar), wrap containers in plastic wrap and tape them just in case they spill. Transport any perishable items in an insulated grocery bag or cooler.

Moving may not be the most fun you’ve ever had, but planning ahead along with pizza and beer will go a long way toward making the process more bearable.
